Hotel Bidju – A roadside retreat

In the red of the wall that looks like an extension of the earth, silver letters announce its name: Hotel Bidju. And our mind, like a search engine, searches our memory for where we would have heard a similar name. And we find it in this drawer of the auditory memory that we put together the songs we listen to throughout our lives and that seem forgotten until we get back in touch with something that brings us back to them. And you can guess our astonishment when Gina Francisco, the hotel manager, confirms it: Bidju – the name that gives the hotel its name – is the voice of songs like Weio Bany or Dhinoparrua or the most popular Não Me Beija na Boca, songs that filled (and still do?) the dance floors with couples in love.

There are 17 rooms in three villas of up to two floors, on the side of the road, which allow you to understand how Chimoio wakes up and all the life that will follow. It’s a roadside retreat.

Inside the Hotel, a wall made of canvas, a la street art, which reminds us of the murals that have been made by young people and that have been changing the landscape of several neighbourhoods in capitals such as Maputo and Beira.

The next morning, we would notice the “I Love Chimoio” sign, almost in front of the hotel, wet by the light rain that heralds a new day. The sun would swallow the rain. There is much of the city to discover.

▶ How to go

From Maputo, you can reach Chimoio with LAM. After a trip of close to half an hour by car, you arrive at the Hotel.

▶ Where to eat

Food is always a way of getting to know the cities. The restaurants in Chimoio allow for much of this immersion. But you can start with the hotel food.

▶ What to do

Walking through the streets of Chimoio, on foot or riding a motorcycle taxi, can offer a much-needed human experience in new places. Climbing the Old Man’s Head is also a test of adventurers. If you are even more adventurous, you can head to Chinhamapere, 45 minutes from Chimoio, to see the cave paintings.
