A golden patch of green

The name suggests the tree. But in the lush green backyard, we find more than palm trees. And we think that the golden yellow walls against the green plants can also signify the perfect contrast. We feel immersed in a garden. There are lambaris, acacias, frangipanis, honeysuckle, lilies and other species that serve as testimony to a hand that can make any plant spurt from the ground. “A credit to my husband, who is not even a gardener”, tells us Célia Poitevin Rocha, the owner.

Located in city of Maputo, at 948 Patrice Lumumba Av., Palmeiras Guesthouse was once just a family home. The living room, with its old furniture and antiques, is the greatest proof. With no TV, only the radio available to the visitor, it reminds us of the time when socializing in the living room was an encounter with the other who is an extension of us, far from the screens that light up our faces and make everything and everyone around us invisible. Today, more than two decades after the first step, the Guesthouse is made up of two blocks with 15 rooms, some with interior gardens. Yes, once again, a green patch.

With the silence the night brings, we hear the water running from a fountain that seems to be born from the stones. We escape from the world. But we know that, outside, the city insinuates itself.

▶ HOW TO GO

From Mavalane International Airport, in Maputo, it’s about a 7km-drive until the guesthouse.

▶ WHERE TO EAT

Without a set menu, the kitchen takes visitors’ orders for lunch and dinner, and it’s always a good option. But breakfast, which is nothing short of brunch, has to be taken right at Palmeiras Guesthouse.

▶ WHAT TO DO

From Art in the Galleries and Museums, to the beaches of Costa do Sol and Catembe, to the cultural life of Maxaquene and Chamanculo, passing through Mafalala, the city of Maputo has an infinity of offers. But sitting down with Célia Poitevin Rocha and listening to the Guesthouse construction process is a lesson in entrepreneurship and life.
