Mafalala B&B Museum

A dash of history and two culture cubes

It was in July 2019 that what is now the most emblematic museum in the city of Maputo was inaugurated. And, with it, the accommodations that would delight all those who wish to lose themselves – or perhaps find themselves – in the cultural melting pot that is the Mafalala neighbourhood. We are talking about the Mafalala B&B museum.

It is impossible to describe the accommodations at this location without mentioning the museum itself, which emerged inspired by the artistic and cultural wealth of the neighbourhood where some of the most influential personalities in the history of Mozambique came from, in the political, artistic and sporting arenas.

Influenced by the architectural reality of the neighbourhood, where wood and zinc predominate, characteristic materials of the capital’s peripheral neighbourhoods, the architecture of the Museum evolved, through the use of masonry, glass and aluminium, to make this building more contemporary, projecting the idea of a space that transforms and evolves over time. Without, of course, getting rid of its traditional roots, which are an integral part of the constructive identity of this and other places in the city of Maputo.

Inside the yellow – a colour that so well represents the richness of this space – and ruby facades – which characterizes the diversity of cultures and the dynamics of Mafalala – nests an alternative and very cultural accommodation, consisting of 2 bedrooms, one suite and a standard room, and a dormitory for 10 people, suitable for groups.

If you want to feel the heart of the city of Maputo beating and to be part, even if temporarily, of a rich mosaic filled with the most diverse ethnicities, cultures and religions, this is the perfect place.

How to go

There are 3 main entrances. Via Avenida Acordos de Lusakaa; along Avenida de Angola or Avenida Marien Ngouabi, which leads to Rua de Goa. The main reference is the Campinho da Mafalala, which is right next door.

The Museum is also represented on Google Maps, so you just need GPS.

Where to eat

There is a shared kitchen for guests and well equipped for preparing meals. The Museum also has a restaurant service.

What to do

From visits to the Museum’s galleries, to guided tours of the Neighbourhood, there is a lot to do: visit the houses of former presidents Samora Machel and Joaquim Chissano, the houses of poets Noémia de Sousa and José Craveirinha, visit the José Craveirinha house-museum, watch the Tufo da Mafalala Group perform or ride a bike around the neighbourhood.
