ÍNDICO 65 – Letter to our readers

Cover, issue 65 Jan/Feb

Ariadna Capece writes and Luna Sigaúque illustrates. The first is 12 and the second is 9 years old and they are part of the news at Índico magazine for 2021. The Lounge section is now filled with children’s stories and illustrations, in partnership with the Fernando Leite Couto Foundation (FFLC). Also with the FFLC, we present in the Altitude section the Indian Ocean Encounters, a space for culture, reflection and debate, where different artistic expressions intersect in a dialogue between generations. The doors are opened to us by the musician Wazimbo and the multi-faceted artist Eliana Nzualo. Leonel Matusse Júnior brings us these voices. This encounter, like the others that will follow, is recorded and will be available soon in video and podcast formats.

In this edition, we also have the Special on Industry in the city of Maputo, an economic centre and capital that concentrates a considerable part of the national industry. The result of the partnership between Índico and the Industrial Association of Mozambique, this supplement will allow, over six editions, to map who produces what and where in the 11 provinces of the country.

Elton Pila and Jay Garrido invite us, at Premium, to visit the Bazaruto Archipelago, off the coast of Vilankulo, Inhambane province. And they give us the experiences of this open-air aquarium and of the view at the top of the dunes. In Other Stops, Eliana Silva takes us to Singapore, the “wonderchild from Southwest Asia”.

From the Island of Mozambique, Wixutta, “knowledge” in Emakwa, comes to us. Paola Roletta tells us, in Classes, about a project by Moira Forjaz. Also related to projects, BioMec, a start-up that makes prostheses from plastic garbage found in the sea, is also a highlight. This story of those who save the environment while returning former mobility to people who have lost it, has the face of Marta Uetela and is told in First Row.

In this first edition of 2021, we also introduce you to the enchanted workshop of Dabanga dos Santos; Mabunda Moleskine in Cult Object; the revelation of the city with Maputo Bay at Night; and the panna cotta tasted by Pope Francis at the Campo di Mare restaurant.
