City Lodge Hotel Maputo – A returnticket

We walk through the bedroom door and discover a personalized handwritten note. A feminine hand that insinuates itself into the round letters. And it takes us back to the days of painstakingly written children’s letters to disguise the shame expressed in the embarrassed voice before the girl of our eyes. And then clenching our fists in prayer that the letter wouldn’t come back stung, a shower of paper over our heads that already hinted at rejection. How precocious the loves of 20th century Malanga were. The previous sentence is by Luís Carlos Patraquim about Dante and Beatrice Portinari. And it wasn’t Malanga, it was Florence. It wasn’t the 20th century, it was the poetic 13th century.  And then we thought of this hand – that of the City Lodge Hotel – writing custom for 144 rooms, another way of exercising the muscle in the detail that always reminds us of the whole, a welcome note that asks for a return.

Adversiting

And then we went down to dinner, a long buffet, sea and land, meat and vegetables and so many ethnic groups licking their lips in the large dining room.

The morning comes rushing in, pushing us out into the street. In the drift of every day, the ships in wheels on the tarmac that burns with the weight of the long queues to and from work, we seem to have unlearned how to see the city. And suddenly we notice that the acacia trees are blooming. Among the green leaves, flowers burst forth with the color of the late afternoon sun, teaching us how to be born every year until it dies.

How to get there

Just 15 minutes from the airport, the City Lodge Hotel Maputo is easily accessible. On Julius Nyerere Avenue, a billboard advertises it.

Where to eat

The hotel already serves a multitude of dishes. But its location also means you’re close to the fish or chicken market. But you can also try the now infamous fishermen’s market. If you’re a lover of more conventional venues, there are plenty of options around the city.

What to do

A morning stroll along the waterfront. A visit to the Fortress, the Natural History Museum, the Geology Museum or the Historical Archives and get a glimpse of a Maputo that long predates this one. When night falls, there are several nightclubs that can give you a sense of what this contemporary Maputo is like.
