Jardim dos Aloés (Aloe Garden) – House of charm

In this ever-labyrinthine Omuhipiti, with its lime-colored walls resisting the salt of the sea and time, we move like the circle with the triangle-mouth of Tōru Iwatani. And we end up in front of a door with the strength of the punches it contains. The sign above it announces the name: Jardim dos Aloés (Aloe Garden), the miraculous plant that spreads throughout the yard, dressing the earth and the walls. The propositional plant that subordinates charm to the house. An apartment and three more spacious rooms taking us back to a time that will also be ours. That of the bathtub dug into the floor and the bookcase carved into the wall where we belatedly meet Fernando Manuel with his “Chá das Sextas”, the chronicles that wish to be a space for conversation.

And when the black hand of night sweeps away the stars, we follow them like wizards to the possible Bethlehem. A terrace, a stone mat. In the background, the sound of the waves, the sea just a black sheet that moves in the agitated choreography of the sleep of shipwrecked lives.

▶ How to get there

Fly with LAM to Nampula and from there it’s a drive of just over two hours to the island of Mozambique.

▶ Where to eat

The island is a gastronomic itinerary in itself. From the taverns by the sea to the restaurants in the centuries-old buildings that mark the memory.

▶ What to do

Wander the streets between Macúti City and Pedra e Cal, visiting monuments that remind you of other times. By boat you can go to Goa Island. In August, you may even be lucky enough to see whales and dolphins that come ashore off the Island of Goa.
