Maputo Beach Resort – A Hidden Treasure

Maputo Beach Resort – A Hidden Treasure

It is probably one of Mozambique’s best kept secrets.

Accessible only by 4×4, Machubo beach has an extensive and practically deserted sand stretch.

Next to the coveted beach of Calanga, in the Maragra sugar mill area, Machubo is even more remote, but just as beautiful.

As you pass the sugar mill, the horizon contains the promise of a paradise beach in the distance. On the right side, protected by dunes, you will find Machubo Beach Resort, a lodge with several units with multiple configurations (the largest one sleeps 15 people and has a private splash pool), all self-catering, in addition to lots where you can set up your own tent, with bathroom and kitchen support.

Built on a 22-hectare property, the resort also has a shared swimming pool and nature trails. The warm hospitality of the two owners, Bertie Stander and Dino Tchuma, is one of the attractions of staying there.

Whether for a weekend getaway or a longer stay, the resort offers an appealing shelter from the hustle and bustle of the city, where you can go to charge batteries to the sound of the ocean waves.

▶  HOW TO GO

From Maputo, follow the N1 heading North. Before reaching Manhiça, you will find signs on

Your right-hand side to Maragra. Follow the road and complete the registration formalities at the entrance to the sugar mill complex. Passing the cane plantation, turn right and follow the

Directions provided by the resort. It is essential to use a 4×4 vehicle and it is recommended that you arrive before nightfall, to better see the way.

▶  WHERE TO EAT

The lodge is self-catering and guests must bring their own supplies. If you order in advance, you can also ask for a meal to be prepared at the resort’s bar.

▶  WHAT TO DO

With a deserted beach at your disposal, you can walk by the sea for hours until you get tired. Nature walks are also possible on the resort property. Depending on the time of year, you may be lucky enough to spot migrating whales (July to November) or nesting turtles (October to March).
